Photoshop Induction

In todays photoshop induction, our task was to edit one of our ink 'drawing from reference' images, and create 4 variations of the chosen piece.

Original -'cleaned up' image

We applied these techniques to our work as we were learning them.
Initially we cropped our image - able to rotate and adjust until happy with the composition. We then cleaned up the image by using the spot healing brush to eliminate any unwanted marks, before enhancing the grey tones in levels, - creating a brighter and purer image.

I learnt that any small mistakes made such as smudges on the line work, could be corrected with the brush tool. - with such you are able to choose a tone you would like the desired area to become, before changing the size, and edge of the tool allowing for very precise work.

After the clean up process, i was able to experiment with the lighting and contrast of tones. Keeping the image black and white I created 4 different interpretations.

Some of my edits were a lot more subtle than others. For this example I simple yet enhanced the dark shadows, to a bolder black, and brightened the highlights and mid tones, - but was careful not to over contrast in order to preserve some detail. I think that this subtle change has made a successful edit.

In others I aimed to change the arrangement completely, such as inverting the image (below right). This took the darkest, and brightest tones and switched their arrangement giving an opposite effect to the original. Taking a similar approach with the below right image but with more of a subtle change. The mid tones are switched in place of the darkest tones.
In this session I found recapping some of the basic photoshop skills useful; I leant some editing techniques that proved to be quicker and more efficient than those I had been previously using.
