Colour, Value, Notion - screen print

Value relates to the chroma saturation purity and intensity of any given colour. From reviewing the handout, it is clear that value plays an important part of the composition of an image.
it states that we can use value to draw attention to a certain area of information.
colour theory.
Using a colour palette is a good way to determine which combinations will work well together in an image. within a colour palette colours may: Harmonise, Vary, contrast, accent, compliment.
note; using a simple colour palette can often be the most effective/successful.

Task; to create a 2 colour separation screen print relating to the theme of 'doing something good'. I aimed to consider these colour theory principles when designing my roughs, as well as thinking about frame, arrangement, line of sight, depth and viewpoint.
- My first thoughts on doing something good was to orientate my image around an activity i enjoyed doing/ have missed doing.
- My final set of roughs - focused around photography, at one of my favourite places in the world. - country kerry, Island. I wanted to capture the wildlife and beauty of the surroundings.
- Using just two colours I needed to think about how to simplify information, as well as the use of negative space.
- chose to portray a sunset. with this ides i felt using a black silhouette in the foreground would contrast well against a striking red/orange. - dramatic contrast.

I faced quite a few difficulties with this task.
- working out the combination of only two colours. - felt that i overcomplicated this at first, working with too many layers and details. this confusion forced me to simplify down my image.
- the sunset shapes were perhaps too overpowering, - messy looking the silhouette looked a bit lost in the background.
I simplified down for my final composition - tried to incorporate skills i had learnt previously. - bringing the foreground larger in the frame. - creating a sense of depth.

Final Roughs

Negatives for print

Final screen print:

- initially i was worried that perhaps the small details - such as water movement, and the think water reeds wouldn't turn out through printing, but luckily they did. in future though i think i would perhaps reduce these details. - using thinker more solid line.
- Although i would have perhaps liked to have included more areas of colour within the silhouette and sunset,i e, fractions of light - picking out areas of the face. - I feel that the final print of block of colour work well to create a striking image against the striking orange.

Had some trouble with the actual printing process. - the black paint had been mixed last week, but because i didn't make that screen print session, it had begun to dry out. this meant it was difficult to spread. - many of my prints disappointingly turned out patchy.
- overlay of pink. - it would have perhaps been more effective if the silhouette also had a pink layer overlay.

- I tired some fun experimentation with marbling the paint. - although not fitting with the brief, i really liked how these turned out. I would defiantly like to try screen printing in future, and look forward to attempting a 3/4 colour screen print, and perhaps more marbling!
