A Clockwork Orange - Initial Ideas

In response to the film, i want to create something evolved around the idea of torture and control, - its a cycle for alex. - he is the torturer, but becomes the trotted when society tries to control him. -  almost like a vicious cycle. i wanted to express this in the imagery in some way…
- I like the idea of featuring a face, but i know that this needs to be done in a unquie way to avoid cliches! I want the content to be quite unsettling to look at - disturbing, uncomfortable but intriguing much like the story.
- I began to explore these key ideas and instantly saw potential in the direction of my work to develop this further.

  • i think seeing how cliche a face could be for this cover, pushed me to try and think in more abstract terms. I created these twisted and distorted faces, and body parts which i really liked - pushed this further and combing in with some of the face designs.
  • the two together - the face, and the clawing hands are representing the alex and his tortured self

  • I really liked this concept and continued to play around with the positioning of the arms to create a more disturbing composition. - the tight grip around his neck and arm exposed from the mouth are quite disturbing…its working well to create the effect that i want!
  • the startled eye is quite a good way of exaggerating the proportions of the face - making it feel more surreal and terrifying.
  • i began to consider type swell. I aim for the type to feel as part of the illustration, and well considered. I like this composition. - need to make sure the type is clear?
  • After sketching and developing around this design, i reached a composition i am happy with! i think it embodies all the main elements and themes that i wanted to include; I wanted to focus heavily on the theme of Alex’s torture and punishment. - controlled due to cruel and evil actions. - conformed to societies labels. - trying to restrain him, but true evil breaks free.
