Responsive - Study Task 1

For one of my smaller briefs  i have decided to take part in the penguin design award competition. Within this brief there are three books, in which it is asked that the designer creates a book cover sleeve for all or one of the the following;
- A Clock work Orange, Anthony Burgess.am strongly drawn to the ‘clock work orange’ title. but perhaps i could also attempt the others? for now i will focus my attention on one! - i don't want to just do the others for the sake of it if i don’t find them exciting or interesting i will struggle to see them through!
The Brief

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

The daring and electrifying book that inspired one of the most notorious films ever made.
‘What we were after was lashings of ultraviolence’
In this nightmare vision of youth in revolt, fifteen-year-old Alex and his friends set out on a diabolical orgy of robbery, rape, torture and murder. Alex is jailed for his teenage delinquency and the State tries to reform him - but at what cost?
A dystopian horror, a black comedy, an exploration of choice, A Clockwork Orange is also a work of exuberant invention which created a new language for its characters.
‘Every generation should discover this book’ Time Out
‘Still delivers the shock of the new . . . a red streak of gleeful evil’ Martin Amis

The Brief

Clockwork Orange is as dazzling and inventive to new readers today as it was when it was first published half a century ago. The story is well known both in celluloid and print so it is essential to come at it from a fresh angle. Try to design a new cover for a new generation of readers, avoiding the obvious clichés. Originality is key.
Your cover design needs to include all the cover copy as supplied and be designed to the specified design template(B format, 198mm high x 129mm wide, spine width 10mm).

What the judges are looking for:

We are looking for a striking cover design that is well executed, has an imaginative concept and clearly places the book for its market. While all elements of the jacket need to work together as a cohesive whole, remember that the front cover must be effective on its own and be eye-catching within a crowded bookshop setting. It also needs to be able to work on screen for digital retailers such as Amazon.

The winning design will need to:

  • have an imaginative concept and original interpretation of the brief
  • be competently executed with strong use of typography
  • appeal to a contemporary readership
  • show a good understanding of the marketplace
  • have a point of difference from the many other book covers it is competing against
  • be able to sit on the shelves of a supermarket or ebook store as easily as it sits on those of more traditional bookshops
Copyright must be cleared for all images used in your cover design.

What problem is being identified by the brief?

The design needs to be fresh exciting, and represent the iconic story for generations to come. the cover needs to be brave, interpreting the classic tale as never seen before through an inventive and well considered concept.

What is the brief asking you to do?
To create an inventive, current, conceptual and unique book cover design that communicates themes within the story! To create a design that will visually captivate, and stand out from the shelves. They are interested in seeing how imagery and typography can be cohesively and creative included.

Who will benefit?
Penguin themselves, the book reader, the author, the book shops, and young generations of readers.

Who is the audience?
The audience for this is not specified. The story is appreciated by older generation but the purple of this brief is to put a new spin on things and reach out to a younger audience. However it will not be suitable for young children due to the content. perhaps and age range of 13-30?

Can you foresee any problems in responding to the brief?
perhaps working on a book sleeve format? I've never done this before and haven't really had to think about the flow or an image in this way. I don't want the front and back covers to look disjointed, i want there to be a cohesive flow from front to back.
Im nervous about working with type!! perhaps try and think about how it could be incorporated from the start in order for the final composition to feel well considered. - don't put it off and just stick some writing on at the end!! Hopefully through doing this brief I can improve my typography skills.
