Clockwork Orange - Research;

- SYNOPSIS: The movie is based on the novel by Anthony Burgess and takes place in a future where crime has run rampant and there is very little to be done about it. Alex is the leader of a gang of droogies and is particularly vicious. After accidentally killing someone he is imprisoned and volunteers to under go a new form of treatment in which his body associates violence of any kind with extreme feelings of nausea and sickness that are strong enough to paralyze him. Afterwards he attempts suicide and the government is forced to “fix” him again, restoring him to his former self and covering up the whole experiment.

- I have read parts of the book in past, and i am drawn in by uniquely horrifying story. i have always been interested in understanding psycopathy and this kind of subject. I think its such an interesting theme to explore and and to try and interpret through illsurtation. It will be challenging i think to communicate the well but an exciting one at that. I think in order to fully understand and respond i need to first look at the book in more detail.
although reading the book would be the most ideal, with the time remaining on this brief unfortunately it would be a challenge. I did however find it very useful and inspiring to watch the critically claimed film adaptation, - making notes of my thoughts, and feelings throughout and stand out quotes. - It was useful how the story was narrated with lines from the novel.

What i took away from the film;
- A sense of how twisted and gruesome the story is.

  • feel that it provided me with a good insight into the main character - their experiences, thoughts, motives. - Alex DeLarge
  • consequences for your actions, control, torture, evil mind, self righteousness.
  • moral choise - good vs evil.
  • The story has a lot of metaphors that could be used.
  • wether its depicting a scene or producing something thats more symbolic? thats up to me to explore.
  • I generally just feel as though i already have a better understanding and ability to answer the brief. I think it is integral understanding the story and having some sort of interest in order to produce artwork thats exciting and successful.

    “Is it better for a man to have chosen evil than to have good imposed upon him?”
    “The important thing is moral choice. Evil has to exist along with good, in order that moral choice may operate. Life is sustained by the grinding opposition of moral entities.”
  • “If he can only perform good or only perform evil, then he is a clockwork orange—meaning that he has the appearance of an organism lovely with colour and juice but is in fact only a clockwork toy to be wound up by God or the Devil.”
  • “Oh it was gorgeousness and gorgeosity made flesh. The trombones crunched redgold under my bed, and behind my gulliver the trumpets three-wise silverflamed, and there by the door the timps rolling through my guts and out again crunched like candy thunder. Oh, it was wonder of wonders.”
