Final Composition - Print Two.
Third and Final design. - Hand. ' no escape'
- I felt a bit unsure about which images should be selected as my finals because there were a lot of compositions that i felt had the potential to be developed pieces. However after speaking with ben, I was confident that the 'hand' should be one of them - really likes the concept and composition - the depth.
- Concept; The characters realisation of being trapped. Trapped within the clutches of the landscape - with no escape from the murder they have commited.
- The 'no escape' piece quite easily fits with in the series - would come in the middle of my other two finals.
- Alter the composition slightly - centre the hand on a page would look better.
- Decided to draw a few variations of the hand until achieving correct proportions. - but the original image is pretty close to how i envisage it to look.
- considered featuring two hands - but this would mean each is smaller and so less detailed.
- I was really happy with the people and tree detail featured on the hand. but what about the surroundings? - Instead of small dots i would like to create visabl birds flying from the trees. - perhaps consider other details around the edge of the prints to lead the eyes attention to the middle? so the hand feels less lost on the surrounding space? - will this be too detailed to cut with lino tools?
- A criticism would be that perhaps more roughs would have been a good idea. - but I'm really excited about developing these designs - I've put a lot throughout into the concepts, and some have been developed recently to get to the point they are in my sketchbook - i.e. through my usual journal i have become more refined towards the end from bringing in different aspects from other pages. - combining.
- Considering i haven't really done lino cut / mono printing befre the inductions - i feel that theres not much use spending any more time on development when I'm happy with these designs - my time now needs to be spent on the process.
- Now all designs are developed and finalised I feel much more confident that they work as a set. sticking with these key themes/scenes from the book that all relate to each help. - i.e. when choosing my colour palette and style - the similar tone of voice will help the pieces feel connected.
- They work as stand along prints, and also as a series. Depicting some key themes, centred around the characters journey throughout the book.
- I don't think people will relate these instantly to Donna Tartt or the novel. But that wasn't my purpose for these prints. I wanted these images to represent the novel yes, but in a subtle way. - mysterious, and slightly haunting - like the themes they're representing.
- Adapting down for lino - reducing the information, strengthening lines. etc.
