End of Module Evaluation

1.  What skills have you developed through this brief and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
Through this brief, i feel as though i have developed my ability to evaluate. - throughout the designing process i think i have become more critical, and confident making decisions of how to move forward. Evaluating through drawing has become more frequent. - visually able to see whats working, what needs to be improved. - generally been more exhaustive with my ideas.
I have become more focused. Ive started working in a quieter environment, away from any distractions, and setting daily targets. (although time management is still an issue) it has helped me to speed up, - working with more of an urgency, so I feel like I'm producing more quantity. i think the briefs have benefited from this.
Becoming more comfortable employing new skills and methods of working. Being put under the pressure of learning these new skills - the Gif making, and illustrator, forced me to adapt quickly and get stuck in. I was quite nervous about using illustrator, but actually really enjoyed it! I think this module has definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, but opened me up to trying more new things in the future, - not be as worried about getting it wrong, just take risks.

2. What approaches to/methods of image making have you developed and how have they informed your concept development process?
I feel that my digital skills have improved a lot through this brief through using illustrator and creating gifs mainly. But also photoshop. towards the end of the module, learnt more about how i can incorporate both digital and analogue media. - previous to this - i.e. gifs, i dimly scanned in my images. In persons of note, i learnt more about layering textures, and how effective manipulating images on screen can be. the result was an effect that could not have been created by hand, so I'm really pleased i employed this into my work. - although had knowledge before putting it into practice has made it much easier to remember for future.
Becoming more familiar with digital software has effected my designing process. - when creating roughs - considering how they could be adapted to digital - this sometimes affects the simplicity of a design - use of shapes. - or how ambitious i can be.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I think i have become better at communicating through this module - tone of voice/intent is clearer. - i am being more considerate of how mark making, colour composition as well as other image making, can be used to inform the ….of a piece of illustration. i.e., in persons of note, i developed my painting skills to create expressive mark making. - feel that this painting technique really helped to communicate the intended emotion.

I think I have been better at exhausting ideas perhaps - not just going with an initial thing - mainly through gifs. I found myself wrestling more with compositions, and media, which was much more beneficial - reaching a conclusion that i feel generally more happy with - less rushed better considered.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
Timing. - something that i am trying to work improve with each module, and feel that i am beginning to find a balance. - being ill a lot doesn't help to keep up and i still find myself falling behind at times. I have realised that i need to then be better at balancing my time between tasks so one doesn't suffer badly.
i.e. - in greetings from i failed to complete the final postcard which i am really disappointed with.  I would have loved to see a completed set, - although i feel that I might have achieved this if not being ill, i did overcomplicate the task. if simplified the designs of the postcards - because i think i had a strong concept, - then i would have defiantly finished. - need to really consider this more in future - the length of time each task will take me.
Blogging. i haven't been consistent with the blogging - need to do some everyday!! or at least be on top of this each week. Its definitely hot me the last few days, when i have had trouble uploading images and things going wrong - resulting in this late submission. it is something that is essential for me to improve.
- Felt towards the end of brief - playing it a bit safe, although not initially intentional. - tried to change this around by employing more digital skills at the very end but wish i had done this earlier.
Consistency. There are some valuable skills i learn at one stage- but then don't always follow it through. i.e. - greetings from - i leant to and really benefitted from creating quicker roughs, producing more. - persons of not - little bit, but seemed to take a step back. need to try and employ things that have worked successfully otherwise will not grow./improve my practice.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

- Blog every day - be caught up by the end of the week, in order to not have a break down at the end of the module.
- Be more decisive. - although found it good to exhaust ideas - i think that this defiantly effects my time management. This could be improved by making quicker decisions.
- Be continuously reflective - write down thoughts more onto blog - find I question things a lot but write on pieces of paper that disappear. making sure I document my though process better will make my blogging easier and more successful.
- Take more risks continue to try new things. To push my abilities - broader understanding/skill set.
- Plan time - timetable weekly and really strive to stick to it! - if i meet set targets, hopefully i will be less stressed and complete all briefs fully.

Evaluation

I felt that time caught up with me towards the end of the brief. I faced few struggles, and ended up steering away from initial plans, which in turn has made me struggle with timing. However, i feel that i have created quite a successful set of work that answers the brief. - some more so than others.
- initially i wanted the same theme to clearly run through all pieces for them all to look very similar - perhaps then they would have worked better as a set, however i have used colour, and media to tie them together which i think has worked successfully. I also quite like the variety between each one; it has allowed me to employ different skills which i have enjoyed.
- I began to use photo sop more which has really benefitted my final out comes. the overall quality is a lot more professional, and i have enjoyed manipulating my images.

Postcards

Poster

- I feel that my postcards and poster have been the most successful. the concept behind these pieces; my aim was to display Bettie Pages mental struggles - the pressure that the modelling put her through, the darker side lesser known about her life.
- the stamps i feel like i really had to rush towards the end so the concept isn't really there. however, i used photoshop to create the whole piece which i was a bit wary about, but i was actually quite pleased with the outcome.
initially i struggle to approach this. - I found it difficult to simplify the information, but eventually became bolder in my decision making. - so my intended meaning behind each piece isn't represented as literally - the concept can be vague. perhaps people didn't have to know my intention, but i still wanted to make them feel a certain way when viewing the pieces, - feel the negative emotion. I think you get a sense of this through the expressive mark making, obscured parts of the imagery.
Im glad i chose to simplify the compositions by not including a background, i think the message is a lot more impactful and they're visually striking.
- The places where i spent more time experimenting and creating many variations were the most successful in future i would like to balance my time more efficiently between work to achieve all at a similar standard.

Stamps Final.

- Final compositions - lips, eye - including famous fringe, bust, and legs/shoes. - feel that these are all good representations of Bettie Page, - although cropped in closely, they're relatable to her image.

- So i decided to create these digitally. - I have enjoyed incorporating photoshop into my work, but would like to try using it more frequently. I wanted this piece to be predominantly digital. - challenge my skills. - i would like to become more comfortable when incorporating photoshop into my practice.
- drew out basic shapes - better quality proportions.
- scanned in to photoshop. - began by going around the shapes iwht lasso tool splitting into block shapes but wasn't happy with the outcome.
- started to experiment with brushes and adding different effects. - i really enjoyed using different brushes - as i haven't really experimented with many. Found i could create some interesting textures. - really like the use of simple flat colour - but also i love how the use of this brush brings a certain amount of detail to the image.
- I enjoyed building up tone with the brush - altering opacity sometimes. like that it doesn't give a slid edge - its interesting - more of a natural fade/transition between shades of colour.
- using my Wacom tablet turned out to be really beneficial. - have struggled in the past to add detail with a mouse, but this way is so much easier! i will definitely be trying this again in the future. much more successful.
- used the slight pencil shading as a guide - created a new layer over the top to paint on. - in future try and do without shading in pencil.

- i felt really limited with time when attempting these, and feel that they could have been done better, but overall am please considering i didn't spend that much time. I could have attempted these on illustrator perhaps - would have enjoyed employing these skills again.
- like the colours - trying to tie all three to a similar colour scheme. - even though in a different media - i think this similarity means they work as a set.
- perhaps these two could have been more zoomed in. - as though they could all make up the same sizes body. - closer ups are more striking perhaps.
- These compositions are much more successful in my opinion. - the close ups. More provocative and intriguing . - Although not as conceptually strong as the others, theres still a certain sense of mystery - a questioning of whats in the image - not overly obvious.
- Parts of her are exposed but only some. - perhaps again representing her shy side - unwilling

Stamps Development

- developing on initial close ups. - this idea - showing the transition of bettie page. - from her more innocent self - on first arriving new york, through to her bondage days. - graduation of her becoming more provocative.
-Definetly not clear enough in examples i have - the poses could be stronger. - perhaps testing in the same media would have helped.
- used combinations of ink and pencil - enjoyed manipulating these on photoshop.
- Cropped examples of previous painting: - what areas of the body represent bettie page? what pose/objects. - zoomed in more effective.

- cropping in on the frame - facial expression? body? - slowly revealing more flesh.
- Could have pushed the concept further - from good, to provocative, to born again christian - shown progressive journey.
- briefly testing media - thinking about how i want these to look visually, -think i would like to use a different media for this small scale. - quick digital tests - inspired by andy Warhol.
- I scanned in an outline to photoshop filling in in blok colour, - i really like the simplicity of this effect. - colour tests effective combinations.

- I felt quite pushed for time to complete these stamps, but do wish i had spent more time developing them in the style of andy Warhols work. - using more interesting, strong colour combinations. - editing digitally perhaps illustrator - creating more layers and detail.

- I returned back to my initial concept of focusing on on areas of the body - zooming in further. - cropped an existing painting - but still feel that the image should fill the frame more.
- come to realise that i do want the media to be simplified for the stamps- less detail in these small frames will work better. - not overcomplicate the space.

Postcards - Creating the Finals.

My completed hand painted finals onto red boards. - not as successful as onto lighter mount board - slightly more difficult to pick out the tones, because the background is so much darker. - the black is not as dramatic. however, from my previous poster editing, I was confident that photoshop could give them a whole new look.
- Do like the still like the effect of the paint. - i tired to not go overboard with the detail - focusing on the face but getting more expressive - leaving something to the imagination.

- after scanning and editing the contrast i played around with different colour combinations - replacing colour, adjusting curves, and hues, i was really pleased with them. I chose i selection of soft colours - beginning with the blue of the poster and creating a pink and yellow to compliment.
- experimented wit different effects - really like the surface blur which i applied - gives a softer edge, faded and obscure in places.

Realisations.
- bit stuck. - although enjoying the paint - feel that i could have used this opportunity to try something different.- although too late to change, i have applied digital editing - perhaps take this further?
- concept. was considering this more on in the designing process - for the poster. but somehow got more caught up in creating the imagery. - feel like its not strong enough - basically just visuals not purposeful meaning really. - have more ideas to give and want to try and still consider what could be added?- what are the cards communicating? - think back to initial ideas. - her emotion.

- New concept ideas;
- eating into/tearing away at her soul
- wearing her down
- two sides of - happy/confident - depressed/insecure
- going against her beliefs.

How to make these visual?
- collage photographs - by hand? digitally?
- 'tearing' - literally tear the paper. - showing the two sides - two layers of print out, different colour - create tears.
- create a ripped hop towards her soul. - gradually spreading out - getting larger - almost engulfing her. -this rage, emotion.
Experiments;

 - I like this idea the best, and have a few ideas about how to improve.
plan. - create hand made tears to print outs- like the jagged edge effect- scan in and compile in photoshop. - potential final.

- Editing Process;
- printing out different colour versions of the same file. - creating these rips by hand - gradually increasing in size. - scanned in with each layer placed on top of one another.
- cutting out / spererating each layer in photoshop - to create a drop shadow for each one.

All separate layers in control panel - to alter the colours and create a drop shadow between each.

- creating drop shadow - effective and easy. created an effective depth between layers - really pleased with how well this worked out.

- enhanced the lighting and saturation but still unsure about the colours? - too different, slightly confusing to look at. - i think the rips make the image more difficult read already -the colours add to this.

- Choosing one tone for each separate postcard was a lot better.  creating slight variations of that shade - with one/2 contrasting colours. the more gradual differentiation between layers worked much better...
- Still found the rips to be too harsh - detail of bettie page is missing. its dominated by the hole.
- created a new layer - altered the opacity - rubbing out areas - keeping stronger over the face so it is clearer. this created a much more balanced image - more subtle amount of obscurity.
- Overall i am really please with how these have turned out. despite initial dislike for the paintings - sticking to and wrestling with the idea worked out for the best. i am glad i was able to incorporate photoshop more in the end, - owe it to the success of these pieces.

Finals:

Postcard Development

- Concept of the postcards - to show movement that will flow through the set. she performed routines in front of the camera - want to capture some of her natural movement - bring her to life.
initial idea - have her legs moving - perhaps the colour changing between each image. too subtle? - feel that this composition is also too zoomed out. - needs to be larger in the frame.

- other compositions. - Bettie page did a lot of burlesque performances. - could be a routine of her undressing - removing an item between frames?
- colour change, more expressive marks - as she undresses - becomes more sensual.
- experiment of movement - quite subtle... change in colour could work quite nicely to differentiate if movement is minimal?

Final composition -wanted to crop down on the subject - focus needs to be more on her body. - but perhaps this is too far?
- decided to draw out final - zoomed out - more balanced in the frame - the movement/progression between each one is clearer - crop later if need.
- I think the movement in this series is the right amount of subtlety. they work well together as a set. - playful.

- plan of media. - want to continue with the painting - using a lot of expressive mark making
- could these strong brush strokes also represent her being strong powerful? not just emotion/troubles?
- Decided to work on red board - perhaps giving a different meaning to the marks - give her a powerful, dominating edge.
