Artist Research - Dryden Goodwin

I feel inspired by the work of Dryden Goodwin. His pieces seems to 'convey a process of working out how very personal thoughts and feelings could be expressed and communicated visually.' I am intrigued to learn more about his interesting methods and approaches to drawing.
He often has some sort of emotional connection to the subject. Many of his work are observational drawings of people he knows. - in his early sketchbook he documented that of an ill friend in hospital. "my drawings expressed my attempt to explain something of how i felt and how it seemed she felt."
- "The drawings are some way an emotional record of spending time being with someone experiencing something very intense". - In his work he attempts to capture a specific point in time and a level of intensity.
- 'The drawing, the looking, the sensing'. Goodwin likes to get personal and close with a subject, because for him this process can be as important as the actual drawing. - for it to have that feel.
- From looking at his work, i feel as though you can really see his investment in portray the characters before him. His connection to them is displayed through the expressive bold mark making. as well as conveying an emotional charge, the different marks within a drawing show evidence of a changing thought process.
- He aims to emphasise the importance of his encounters with his subjects, - often having conversation dictate how he approaches the drawing - what kind of marks he makes perhaps.

- I found this hugely enlightening, and really interesting. How he incorporates his emotion and that of the subjects - capturing a real sense of their mood and even who they are is really impressive. -Could i take tips when creating creating Bettie Page? Drawing from observation is something i would like to get better at, particually people, I will refer back to his work in the future.
