Mark Demsteader

Mark Demsteader is a contemporary figurative artist. He is inspired by Victorian art, specifically Dagas and Rembrandt, I think these influences are clear to see through his use of light and shadow, and sombre facial expressions. However, Demsteaders painting techniques give his pieces a much more contemporary feel. To create his beautifully expressive pieces, he uses brushes and palette knives to build up textures, - as well as using his hands to add to the image.
- His images are intensely detailed around the face - with the build of of small brush strokes. I was intently captured by the sense of realism - from this focal point, the composition flows beautifully into more abstract mark making. - giving the images an unfinished look. This perhaps works to draw the viewers attention to the most essential areas - making more of an impact.

The artist describes; “the figure is more of a metaphor for a human being, it doesn’t have to be a particular person.” When creating his paintings, he is an observer, he places sense of distance between the subject and the viewer. - the sense of closeness with the subject is lost - by obscuring or hiding certain details. - His subjects appear to almost blend into the backgrounds and disappear in places - not fully present. I find this hugely intriguing. - believe that this sense of mystery draws the viewer in.
- The pose of the subject also add to the feel of isolation - with them often looking away. The additional use of little colour and strong expressive line, really help to convey the emotion. a combinations creates an intently cold and solitary/ lonly atmosphere.
