'Greetings From' Initial Ideas

Research. - initially - listing interesting cities. - thinking about possible themes to follow. - considering the less obvious aspects - look deeper.
- Some ideas:
(see sketch book for more detail.)

From researching a variety of cultured cities, I am most interested in focusing around the idea of representing the cities through their festivals/traditions/religious celebrations.
Choosing my cities. - I have selected culturally rich and vibrant places, in different parts of the world. - Each having completely separate culture - traditions, religions and celebrations.
- Lantern festival, Temples, Chaing Mai, Thiland
- Festival of the dead, New Mexico - Mexico
- Diwali, and colour festival, India - Varanasi
- carnival, Vienna - Italy
- Mardi Gras, New Orleans

'Festival of the Dead' - mexico

Carnival - Vienna.

Monks praying - Chaing Mai

Diwali - Varanasi
Selection of roughs:

- Initially quite restricted - drawing too neatly - not enough ideas generation at this stage.
- Quite complex imagery - simplify for illustrator - adapt.

Begun working at a quicker pace - being less precious about quality of drawings. - more about exhausting an idea. - really useful to repeat composition. - new perspectives.
- this is a good method of evaluating, and reflecting - making decisions all the time about how they could be improved.
- confident i;ll evolve diwalli around the festival of light - feature a candle in some way. really like the focus on hands.

continued working close up. - found this to be successful in exploring previous roughs. - simplifying information - perhaps no need for a complex background. - how little information can still be telling? is this the challenge?

lantern festival. - like the use of silhouettes - would be simple/ - however perhaps too similar to Diwalli?? focus on something else is thialand?

Feedback from crit:
- Good selection of roughs. - My idea is strong and there are a lot of ways to develop it further.
- I have invested in an idea - good use of repetition, re arranging and developing compositions.
- My most successful compositions are where i have started to become more abstract with ideas - focusing down on details, and been more selective about information. - continue to push this further!
- I found this crit really useful - instead of wasting time continuing to develop other themes, - i now feel confident that this is the right idea to take further.
- Before the crit i felt slightly unsure on how instantly relatable out postcards need to be. - this crit reassured me that we can be more abstract and subtle. - note - not necessary to include city landscapes. i now feel that i ave more freedom and ideas on how to develop further.

*I think my ideas generation has been successful because I working quickly and less precisely, which has really helped me! i aimed to be less precious over roughs as i have been in previous briefs. - feel I have benefitted from this - pushed me to create more ideas which is really important at this stage. and allowed me to begin to develop compositions.
